Preserving Niagara’s Civil War Legacy
The Forsyth‑Warren Tavern Museum team recently spent time at Mount View Cemetery in Pekin, where we carefully uprighted several historic monuments, cleaned, and toured several historic monuments — including the Civil War monument, the first of its kind in Niagara County, dedicated in 1867.
This remarkable obelisk stands as a testament to the county’s earliest efforts to honor those who served. Yet today, the site is overgrown, difficult to access, and in need of restoration. As the monument approaches its 160‑year anniversary in 2027, we are launching a county‑wide campaign to restore and improve the site for public access, education, and commemoration.

Our Goals
- Stabilize and clean the monument and its base.
- Landscape and clear the surrounding area for safe, year‑round access.
- Install interpretive signage to share the monument’s history and significance.
- Engage community volunteers in preservation and stewardship.
Community Collaboration
We invite local organizations, Scout troops, historical societies, and municipal partners to join us in this effort. This project offers hands‑on opportunities for service learning, civic engagement, and historical preservation — connecting generations through shared heritage.
