As a wise colleague recently said: The environmental crisis that we are facing is because our ecosystems are not just in decline, they are in a freefall. Farmland in Cambria is irreplaceable and as stewards of our community, we have a responsibility to future generations to preserve as much of our existing resources as is feasible and financially possible. Leaving a community that remains livable and healthy is a necessity.
Green open spaces are critical to our emotional and physical health. The beauty of wild and farmed lands contributes immeasurably to the quality of life in our community. Nothing should be done that might further reduce the amount of open land and projects that aim at preserving these lands should be meet with support and collaboration. |

Residential development costs more in services than it generates in revenue. Each time a new house is built, existing residents and businesses are forced to subsidize the additional services that are required. The higher the density, the greater the upward effect on taxes.
Good zoning balances many competing demands and reflects the vision of the residents that live in the community. The citizens of our town have articulately expressed a vision for the future that is reflected in the officially adopted Town of Cambria Comprehensive Plan. Let’s follow their guidance.
Our educational institution has achieved autonomy in the last three years which was a tremendous success to the credit of our many volunteers. It’s ability to carry out its mission has, however, been under attack from the beginning and, faced with ever increasing intrusions by government regulation as well as a looming threat of the “Right to Farm” law being revised to no longer include this National Register Landmark, the institution has been forced to seek out rezoning from Agricultural-Residential to Business.
This rezoning would not alter our missions or our strategic plans, but instead would ensure our ability to serve the community for generations to come.
The act of preservation is a communal one and now is a great time for the community to lend their voices to preserving this important cultural landmark.
We are asking those who are able to write a letter, make a phone call, or reach out in any way that you can to the Town of Cambria Town Board and the Niagara County Planning Board and voice your support for the rezoning of the Forsyth – Warren Tavern to B2 (General Business) so that it can continue to serve the community as a working living history farm and museum.
Your letters can be sent directly to the Town Clerk of Cambria at townclerk@townofcambria.com or they can be sent to us at theforsythtavern@gmail.com and we will deliver them to all of the appropriate parties.
